South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, was a short-lived state in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula that existed between 1948 and 1950. The republic succeeded the USAMGIK which had existed since the end of World War II in 1945. It was headed by Syngman Rhee as President who ruled in an authoritarian manner. It claimed sovereignty over all of Korea but the northern half was occupied by North Korea. The country ceased to exist following an invasion by the North in what is known as the Korean War.
