Politics[edit | edit source]
The United Kingdom is a semi-constitutional monarchy where the Sovereign (currently King Charles III) is head of state and exercises executive power. It is a centralised, unitary state with sovereignty lying with the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Government business is primarily conducted through a series of principal (or royal) councils:
- Most Hon. Privy Council (Concilium Familiare) - The Privy Council is the formal body of advisers to the Sovereign and is the executive branch of government for the United Kingdom. The King-in-Council issues Orders in Council (executive instruments) and royal charters, appoints government officials and aids the Sovereign in making policy decisions. It is chaired by the Lord President of the Council. Most active members of the body are senior British government officials but membership also includes former and present government and opposition officials from the UK and from some other Commonwealth realms and dependencies and senior Church of England bishops and judges.
- Law Courts - Judicial arm
- Rt Hon. Great Council (Magnum Concilium) - Peerage arm
- Hon. Common Council (Commune Concilium) - Legislative arm
