Paul Pawlowski (born 1926/1927) was a Polish-born immigrant, Hellenic polytheist and English republican who, from the late 1970s until his resignation in 1996, served as the leader and likely only member of the Republican Party of England and the English People’s Liberation Army.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Not much is known about Pawlowski’s early life. Based on his age, he was born in Interwar Poland in 1926 or 1927. He was taken from his parents during World War II and taken to a Nazi labour camp. Sometime after the war, he married an English woman and had three children with her.

Life in Britain: 1959 to 1970[edit | edit source]

Pawlowski moved to England in December 1959. His temporary visa was extended and he gained employment as a machinist for a computer manufacturing company. He initially stayed at a Polish hostel in South London with his family. However, he would be fined in February 1960 after assaulting a porter at the hostel he suspected of having an affair with his wife causing his wife and children to move to Canada. His passport expired in November 1961 and the Polish authorities, through their embassy, refused to renew his passport, stopping him from visiting Canada. He became a freedom activist against the "red fascism" (Soviet communism) that had taken over his home country of Poland. He wrote to newspapers and UN delegations about Poland's plight and wished to join a "ban-the-bomb demonstration" in Warsaw. The Polish embassy pointed out, wryly, that he could return whenever he wanted. He also protested outside of a Young Communist League rally where he was watched over by the police.

In September 1965, Pawlowski was arrested outside the Spanish embassy and took part in a one-person naked protest while being held in Brixton Prison from the 20th to 29th of September. During his stay at the prison, he read The Iliad. After he left the Prison, he was taken to Horton Mental Hospital where he was treated by three doctors including a Dr. Rowlings, potentially John Rawlings Rees, former President of the World Federation of Mental Health. Another doctor, Dr. Holbeer, claimed Pawlowski held opinions which are "not the opinions of the majority of the people" which is the "sort of thing[s] in Russia" and he was discharged 48 hours after his admission.

Followng his release, he became a polytheist and polyandrist and suggested that seven men should marry one woman to reduce the birth rate. The British Baptist Pacifist Fellowship requested he stop sending "this type of literature" to them. In the three years after he began his polyandry, he picked up two Australian women and one 17-year-old. Gwendoline Gater-Reid, the 17-year-old, claimed she wasn't his girlfriend but "would be prepared to marry him and six other men". After the three years, his polyandry doesn't work out and he blames the other men involved.

The London Church of Aphrodite: Early 1970s[edit | edit source]

In Spring 1970, he explored Greek Hellenist revival with six other people in his home which became the "London Church of Aphrodite". The church was part of the international pagan umbrella "Council of Themis". They published a pamphlet called Fucking and Sucking and Pot is Our Religion:

Everything we do is approved by a god or goddess since there is a diety [sic] for every aspect of human life. Hence drinking strong wine is pleasing to Dionysus, the making of sexual love pleases Aphrodite, the smoking of cannabis pleases all the gods and they would be offended were it not performed to the full.

They planned a Festival of Dionysus to be held somewhere mountainous like the Lake District but it never occured. He was arrested in January 1971 for "insulting behaviour". At court, he called everyone a fascist and the magistrate was familiar with him already. On 30 April, he held a Holy Communion. Nine people showed up, followed by ten police, and a dog, with a search warrant. They spent three hours in a failed search for drugs but they did take with them all files and tapes. The number of churchgoers reached 15 and on 10 October, Pawlowski officiated a wedding in Hyde Park. The wedding featured a cannabis cake in the shape of a penis and testicles. Police arrested Pawlowski. He was bound for £50 but instead demanded an apology from the magistrate and £5 for every day he was in prison. He was sent to Pentonville prison for three months, during which the church was closed. In 1972, he and an anarchist named Bill Dwyer put on a "Windsor Free Festival". The event was a failure and they were arrested on charges of cultivating cannabis. They appeared in court on 6 September 1972. Pawlowski refused to plead and later claimed the cannabis plants had religious uses. He was sentenced to six months in prison suspended for two years while Dwyer was sentenced to two years in prison suspended for three years.

Church membership grew to Bradford, 200 miles north of London, and they celebrated the arrival of the Spring of 1973 by putting on an Ancient Greek play with the local college of arts. They sacrificed a lamb made of bread, with churchgoer David Brown stabbing it ritually. The RSPCA, upon hearing a rumour of an actual sacrifice, sent an inspector. The inspector, during questions from the audience, learnt that the Church had earlier sacrificed a real lamb to Hermes. Brown spoke of Princess Anne's "blood sport" as he left. The news of the sacrifice reached the Council of Thermis which expelled the Church from the international organisation. Pawlowski lived in a St Pancreas commune that summer and planned the sacrifice of a lamb to the god Helios in Great Windsor Park which would feature "music and beer for the wage-slaves of Britain" for 25 August. He informed the Crown Commissioners who informed him that he needed a license while denying his invitation to attend. Squatters stole the lamb and let it loose outside Albany police station. An old lady gave it to the RSPCA which refused to return it to the Church. He wrote to Queen Elizabeth II with the events, stating that she presided "over a bunch of thieves".

An associate at the anarchist magazine Freedom, JR, stated that a "class-conscious comrade being visibly impressed by Paul's presentation of the dilemma faced by an anarchist turner (a skilled craftsman) in modern industry" led to his surprise that Pawlowski was the same "Father Fuck" of the LCA. Pawlowski attributed the 1973-1974 Oil crisis to the displeased god Helios. He sacrificed a fat turkey but it failed to clense the whole world, only the LCA. He also requested 25 metric tons of pure gold to build a golden image of Helios at his temple.

English Republican: Late 1970s to present[edit | edit source]

Pawlowski had been into radical leftist politics for a while, being arrested in Hyde Park Corner in August 1967 for selling Mao Zedong's Little Red Book. He claims to have come up with his English republican ideas when, after moving to the commune in Charrington Street, he spoke with an Indian man named Bijour. Bijour was the shopkeeper of a bookshop on Camden High Street which featured a bust of Mao Zedong in the middle and a window red with Little Red Books. Bijour spoke with Pawlowski at a Cypriot restaurant. Bijour stated that Britain needed a British People's Liberation Army, based off of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and Paul expanded on it, stating that Britain needed an English republican ideology. He split from the Maoist scene to form the English People's Liberation Army which called for the independence of England from "Judeo-fascist" forces. For the EPLA, he bought a house in Accrington to be its headquarters. He drafted a petition against the Queen, signed by 200 at a leftist rally in Birmingham. Encouraged by the petition, he convened a meeting at the Rising Sun pub near Victoria coach station. Five others came where they drunk and talked about English republicanism. He drafted an English Republican leaflet for the "Republican Party of England", at some point known as the "Oliver Cromwell Republican Party of England". He published it under his own name as Secretary of the party. The feedback was negative due to his foreign-sounding surname and so he republished it under the pseudonym Thomas Smith, recieveing a more varied and normal response. The Accrington headquarters of the EPLA was raided by the Special Branch, looking for Thomas Smith. When asked by a Special Branch officer, he replied that the strength of the EPLA was a "military secret", though he was likely the only member. He held a placard and distributed leaflets in Accrington and spent three months in HMP Strangeways where he claims to have recruited prison officers as the first recruits. He was well known in and around Bolton and Accrington for his demonstrations against the marriage of Charles and Diana. He got seven days in jail for a solo demonstration outside Buckingham Palace. The EPLA was "extremely weak" but had "undertaken isolated bomb attacks", including a parcel bomb sent to the headquarters of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. In the 1990s, he published various works under the Republican Party such as "What is democracy? What is fascism? What is genocide?", "Problems of the Republican Party of England: Secretary’s Report" and "The Third World War has Begun". The Morning Star newspaper rejected his advertisements in 1995.

In 1996, Pawlowski stepped down from the Republican Party of England. He called for an English republican to take up the secretaryship:

There is no money in it. It is an unpaid job and you could be ostracised. You could be assaulted. You could be arrested and imprisoned. If war was to break out and English republicans rounded up, you could be the first hanged.

Since then, he has posed online. He claimed in a 2007 rant titled "Treasury war against Republican England" that the RPE stood for the "English Peoples Democratic Republic of England [sic]" and moved further towards anti-semitism, exposing the "JudaeoFascism [sic] over England" and accused Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of "having sent Jew suicide pilots to crash into Twin Towers making War on Terror".

Who is the Number One enemy of England?
